Special Education

MoEdu-SAIL houses a range of modules and training materials developed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Division of Learning Services to support local education agencies (LEAs). SPED modules focus on the implementation of laws and regulations related to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), as well as effective teaching and learning practices tailored to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Access to some of these materials is limited to Missouri improvement and compliance consultants only.

Special Education Learning Modules and Training Materials

The SPED learning modules and training materials focus on the complexities of implementing legal and effective services for students with disabilities within Missouri. These resources have been selected to provide relevant materials for Missouri educators in the areas of SPED compliance, accountability, and assessment. Instructional practices in the areas of literacy, academics, and behavior are also included, in addition to intervention supports.

Implementing IDEA Requirements

These learning modules and training materials are designed to provide support to special educators in implementing the requirements of IDEA.

SPED Process

Participants will develop a basic understanding of special education laws that focus on implementation, including referral, eligibility, IEPs, and progress monitoring.

Developing Standards-Based IEPs Linked to Missouri Learning Standards

Participants will develop a robust plan that improves the IEP with a focus on connecting goals to the curriculum and grade level. Increased knowledge of MAP-A Essential Elements and their use in IEPs will also be addressed.

This module focuses on the use of accommodations; modifications to the curriculum; assessments; and instruction.

Progress Monitoring and Data Collection

Topics in this module include the importance of collecting progress monitoring data; selection of and methods for data collection; and how to analyze data to make instructional decisions.

MAP-A

During this module participants will review the Essential Elements to assess student skills; understand changes made to the KITE Suite; and discuss important dates. The compliance components of MAP-A are also a focus of this module.

Standards-Based IEPs Linked to DLM Essential Elements

Participants will gain important knowledge of MAP-A Essential Elements and their use in developing standards-based IEPs through this module.

Transition Academy

The Transition Academy is designed to help educators plan for college and career readiness and positive postsecondary outcomes for students with an IEP. The components addressed during the academy include Indicator 13; the transition compliance portion of a student’s IEP; how to plan for post-secondary outcomes; and how to include self-determination strategies and skills in instruction. Greater detail will be provided on transition assessment and services, including students in the process of planning their future.

Self-Determination

This module presents an in-depth study of self-determination and implementation of the Model of Self-Determination, including strategies and skills to be used during instruction.

Differentiated Instruction

This module takes educators through an instructional process to proactively transform instruction, learning activities, and student work to maximize student growth and success.
